Advantages and Disadvantages of Renter’s Insurance

There are many people that enjoy being able to rent a home or apartment. This is due to the fact that there isn’t a real commitment. There is no worry over selling if you decide you want to move, and should something break, you can simply call your landlord. Despite this convenience that renters share, these homes are not exempt from other types of damage that the landlord is not responsible for, such as smoke, fire, or acts of God. The best thing to do before this should occur is to purchase renter’s insurance.

Renter’s insurance will cover such things as living expenses if you can no longer live in your home due to damages. This is beneficial for those without close family or friends nearby that can put them up for awhile. Renter’s insurance is also extremely cost efficient, as you are not insuring the entire home, simply your belongings. Your landlord will have insurance to take care of the home, as that is not your responsibility.

When it comes to renters insurance, there are two types of policies that you can obtain. Actual cash value and replacement cost are the types of insurance coverage you can obtain. ACV covers the cost to replace your items minus depreciation, where replacement cost covers what it would cost to replace your items in brand new condition. Your policy will only cover a certain amount and type of possessions, so you may need to purchase additional insurance, depending on your needs.

So just remember, even though renting offers less sacrifice for maintenance, you will still want to have your possessions insured within your rented home.
